How and when you got into the trade?
While studying Environmental Design at OCAD in 2002, I moved into an apartment above Toronto’s famous Made You Look Jewellery Gallery & Studio and spent a lot of time with the owner, Sarah, a dear childhood friend. She taught me some rudimentary skills that allowed me to start producing and selling small lines. I fell hard and fast for the craft and decided to transition into the Goldsmithing program at George Brown College in 2004, graduating in 2006, and I haven’t looked back!
Where do you take your inspiration from?
For me, the inspiration always starts with the stone itself! Every stone holds a unique set of characteristics and speaks to each one of us differently....One of my favourite parts of the custom process is watching the ideas unfurl on the pages of my sketchbook and anticipating which one(s) the clients will be drawn to.
How would you describe your work in 5 words?
Everyday-modern vintage-inspired future-heirlooms.
What was the most memorable piece that you made?
I was honoured and excited to be part of the Solitaire Squad design challenge with Misfit and Gem Breakfast last spring. I chose this incredible 3.17ct icy grey marquise rosecut diamond which allowed me to play around with a larger ‘canvas’ and called for me to explore new technical skills and push some exciting boundaries. I love all the symbolism in birds and wanted to represent personal evolution, transformation and adventure in this piece. I was really happy with the results and felt bitter-sweet when she quickly flew from the nest and off to her forever home.
Why do you enjoy working with Misfit diamonds?
It has been so exciting watching the Salt & Pepper /alternative diamond trade take hold over the last decade. Ashkan & Team Misfit have played a huge roll in that. They’ve set the tone for the most beautifully cut material and have an incomparable and ever-changing inventory to choose from. They also never cease to amaze me with their endless knowledge, enthusiasm and creativity. Working with each one of them is always an absolute joy!
