Buying diamonds can be confusing, and so customers often seek documentation, traceability or provenance when purchasing. At Misfit Diamonds, we ensure that all our diamonds are compliant with standards in place to ensure we are providing fair and traceable diamonds. Despite the fact that all our diamonds are KPC-compliant, they don't always come with complete paperwork. We've broken these varying degrees of provenance and documentation into three categories to allow you to chose the diamonds that are best for your customers: (1) Mine-to-Market, (2) Limited Documentation and (3) KPC-Compliant. Below is a complete explanation of each of these categories.
Diamonds that are Mine-to-Market are part of a unique collection of Canadian diamonds from Ekati or Gahcho Kué with complete set of paperwork documenting their location of origin, rough carat weight, lot #, etc...

Many of our diamonds have partial documentation of their origin, which can be made available upon request. Usually this comes in the form of a KPC certificate for an entire parcel of rough diamonds, a receipt stating the diamond's origin or the origin of a parcel.

While we can ensure that all diamonds at Misfit abide by the standards in place by the Kimberley Process, not all diamonds come with documented traceable origin.

Hey, we’re Misfit, a diamond and sapphire wholesaler that does things a little bit differently. Founded in the summer of 2019 on the idea that being in the jewelry industry is a privilege and that with that privilege comes responsibility, set out to create a company built around three central pillars:
Leave the industry better than how you received it. We believe that ethical sourcing must go above and beyond simply being “conflict-free” according to the definitions laid down by the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). The first step towards raising that standard is establishing verifiable origin and transparent sourcing channels. Once you have documented provenance you can identify the environmental conditions and labor practices used to bring precious stones to market. By working upstream in the supply chain and allocating our resources towards products with mine to market documentation, we can leverage our buying power to increase transparency in our sourcing practices and help to drive change within the diamond and sapphire industries.
Opening the door to that privilege for others by building a company that invests in its people through mentorship, career growth and economic empowerment. We embrace diversity in our hiring practices and welcome people from all backgrounds and walks of life, regardless of whether or not they have prior jewelry industry experience.
Giving back to the community. Contributing to local charities and causes within the cities and countries that we operate in, as well as supporting local jewelry programs and schools in our communities.
Our goal is to work our way upstream in the diamond and gemstone supply chains so that we can help raise the standards of what ethical and transparent sourcing looks like within our industry. By streamlining our operation to focus on the wholesale aspect of the business while partnering with and supporting retailers and independent businesses downstream of us, we will be able to harness the cumulative buying power of our company and our network of clients to command the sort of changes that we want to see within our industry.

Our goal in our wholesale only policy is primarily to ensure that we don’t find ourselves competing with our clients for their customers downstream at the retail level. We believe that by fostering symbiotic supply chain relationships we can harness the cumulative reach of our community to help create the changes we want to see in our industry. We leave the making to the makers and focus on doing what we do best, curating catalogs of unique diamond and sapphire curiosities while working to increase transparency in our sourcing practices and helping raise the standard for what ethical sourcing can look like in this industry.
We specialize in salt and pepper diamonds, fancy coloured diamonds, origin sourced stones, heated and unheated sapphires, diamond melee. Basically all traditional industry cast-offs (list S&P last, it’s not the only thing we sell)
We offer a digital memo. All of our stones have high resolution, downloadable images and videos that you can use to show your clients. Need more images or a natural light video? Just shoot us an email at
Not every stone listed comes with a GIA certification. However, getting your stones certified is something we can do. We would need to submit the stones to GIA for grading, which is a non-refundable cost. The cost is calculated based on the carat weight of the individual stones.
All of our Misfit Diamonds and Sapphires that require additional grading are graded by our in-office certified gemmologists, or by the owner, a long-time experienced diamond dealer. All diamonds and sapphires are graded alongside comaprable stones with grading by gem labs with the highest standards in the industry. Read more below on what we take into consideration for the following types of stones:
We grade according to what we believe the stone would be appraised at through GIA. While we cannot guarantee results, our grading is on the conservative side of what a stone would likely get if sent to GIA. This extends to our light champagnes, light yellows.
Fancy color grading may not be as exact, especially with regards to Fancy White diamonds, light champagnes, and light grays. We have seen diamonds that we would categorize as a Fancy White (featuring the presence of gauzy inclusions or a subtle opalescence) that have received D - G color grades from GIA. With these diamonds there’s a disclosure / disclaimer in description once we have the system finalized.
Another example, Fancy Champagnes similarly with Fancy Light Champagnes, these diamonds can grade anywhere from K-M with a note of light brown color through to light brown and Fancy Light Brown.
Salt and Pepper diamonds by nature are highly included stones. These diamonds can have minor pits and surface reaching cavities, natural inclusions (these are indents where an inclusion within the stone comes to the surface during polishing which cutters try to keep these on the girdle or bottom of rosecut). Our online catalog of Salt and Pepper diamonds are carefully selected to ensure they’re free of pits and cavities that would compromise the diamond’s structural integrity. Diamonds that do have minor surface reaching inclusions have it noted in their descriptions online.
Traditionally sapphires are graded by clarity and uniform coloring. When looking at “Misfit” sapphires it’s more about character. Each stone is one-of-a-kind. We embrace color zoning, unique colors, imperfections, silkiness, and parti coloring.
Heated vs Unheated: while we don’t believe that one is better than the other, we do believe in disclosure. Our sapphires will note if they have been heated or are unheated.
The more included “Misfit” sapphires can have minor pits and surface reaching cavities, natural inclusions (these are indents where an inclusion within the stone comes to the surface during polishing which cutters try to keep these on the girdle or bottom of rosecut). Our online catalog of sapphires are carefully selected to ensure they’re free of pits and cavities that would compromise the diamond’s structural integrity. Sapphires that do have minor surface reaching inclusions have it noted in their descriptions online.

While the majority of diamonds currently in circulation are compliant with the UN approved standards laid out in the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) and are labeled as conflict free, these diamonds are more often than not sold without documented provenance in mixed origin lots, making it impossible to differentiate the origin of the diamonds within. The KPCS also fails to address ongoing human rights abuses and negative environmental impacts of large scale mining globally.
We believe that transparent, verifiable origin is an important first step towards addressing many of these issues. Once origin is established, we can begin to address questions of the humanitarian conditions involved in the mining, cutting and polishing of these precious stones, along with the environmental impacts of these processes. Over the past two years since Misfit was founded we have been working with our manufacturing partners and vendors to create a blueprint for a traceable chain of custody from mine to polish. Last fall we launched our collection of Canadian origin diamonds from the Gahcho Kué Mine where we documented the journey of the diamonds with verifiable data points for each stone from rough to polish.

We don’t sell to the public, but our friends do! Check out our Retail Directory and our Stockist pages to find a jeweler in your area.
Our Integrated Stockist Program is currently not accepting new applications. In 2024, however, we are looking to expand the program further. Below are some details to consider prior to applying to the Misfit Integrated Stockist Program. Customers who have a 6-12 months purchase history with us have been the most successful due to their exposure of Misfit's brand and our unique and natural products. Today, our integration program requires customers to utilize a Shopify e-commerce platform. In addition, we find customers who's solid e-commerce based business models with an engaged social media following have had the most growth within the program. Finally, we view our Misfit Integrated Stockists community as a longterm partnership. Together, we will build scalable sales channels and pour mutual energy and resources into program promotion. We are very proud of every retail stockist within our Integrated Community and are honored to have them as Brand Advocates for Misfit Diamonds and Misfit Sapphires.
We are looking for established customers of Misfit who have shown themselves to be advocates and amplifiers of the Misfit brand. Long-standing clients with consistent monthly purchases will be prioritized, and we will occasionally be capping the amount of listings in certain regions depending on population/market size. The Directory is the next stage of the Misfit wholesale to retail ecosystem that we have been building, and we hope it will be a channel where we can work collaboratively with our clients to generate sales and growth in the future.
If you post your work featuring our stones we want to see it. Use the hashtag #misfitsinthewild so we can find it and to be featured on our feed!
