Grey Diamonds

Salt & Pepper Diamonds

We love salt and pepper diamonds! These one of a kind beauties are what we specialize in here at Misfit Diamonds. Because of the unique characteristics of these stones it's often hard to describe just what type of color you may be searching for. To help answer the question “what color salt and pepper diamond are you looking for?” we've put together a color palette guide for the terminology we use around these stones here at Misfit. When describing the color of salt and pepper diamonds, it is important to also consider the level of transparency. This heavily informs the appearance of color saturation and overall aesthetic.

  1. Clear - crisp, transparent crystal that allows light through easily. Think of a clean traditional stone with a smattering of inclusions for flavor.
  2. Translucent - allows some light to pass through. These stones are semi transparent because they are heavily peppered with clear windows within, or contain gauzy cloud inclusions that diffuse the light passing through.
  3. Opaque - milky stones with subtle light diffusion. These diamonds allow little to no light to pass through them.

Color Palettes

Now let’s talk color. We break salt and pepper diamonds down into four main color palettes:

  1. Icy & Opalescent
  2. Grey
  3. Salt and Pepper
  4. Champagne Salt and Pepper

Icy & Opalescent

Icy & Opalescent Diamonds

Prismatic, warm white-ish in coloration sometimes with a silky rainbow like appearance. The opaque stones tend to be more on the milky side in this color family. While the translucent stones tend to have a more frosty/icy aesthetic. When you’re lucky, the silky cloud inclusions in these diamonds create an opalescent shimmer of color (especially when the diamonds are fluorescent).

Grey

Grey Diamonds

These stones range from translucent pale silver-greys to misty medium greys all the way to opaque dark and stormy greys. Grey diamonds have an expansive color palette that also bridge across hues of earthy green-greys and into champagne greys.

Salt & Pepper

Salt & Pepper Diamonds

The classic! Salt and pepper diamonds encompass moody, opaque black diamonds with silver flecks and translucent windows to crisp, clear white diamonds with dramatic sprays of black carbon ribboning through them. Whether you are drawn to cosmic dark matter or faceted natural ink blots, these are some of our favourite diamonds.

Champagne Salt & Pepper

Champagne Salt & Pepper

From light, warm champagne tones to dark, smoky cognacs, Champagne Salt & Pepper diamonds traverse a wide array of shades. Like their Grey cousins, one can find these stones in an assortment of greens, yellows, orange-reds, with a few rare and radical shades in between.

Nailing The Perfect Diamond

The Gahcho Kué diamond mine is a joint venture between Mountain Province Diamonds, which owns 49% of the project, and De Beers Canada, which holds a 51% interest and is the mine’s operator. The joint venture property is located in the Northwest Territories of Canada, 300 km east-northeast of Yellowknife, on the traditional territories of Tłįchǫ, Dene, and Métis people. The mine site lies on the edge of the continuous permafrost zone in an area known as the barren lands due to its lack of forests.

What's Going on with the Diamond Supply Chain?

October 17, 2023

To say we are living in strange and unprecedented times at this point would be an understatement, however it truly is a bizarre time in the diamond industry. The market has yet to fully recover from the supply chain disruptions (and resulting product scarcity) caused by the pandemic that sent prices soaring in 2021 and 2022.

Diamond from mine to market
The Story of a Diamond: From Mine to Market

January 13, 2023

From the depths of over 150 kilometres beneath Canada’s North West Territories, a shiny 2.58ct diamond was born to the Ekati Mine. Fast forward, the diamond now sits pretty as a 1.08ct cushion cut in a romantic hand fabricated yellow gold ring made by our friend and client, Elana Ginsberg of K&Co Bespoke.
